“You can do anything with a law degree.” How many times have you heard that said since college? A law degree offers plenty of potential career options, but the sheer number of choices can be overwhelming. Working with someone who has coached law students and lawyers in a variety of settings and career stages can be a real help. You don’t need to explain what law school, law firms, legal departments, etc., are like, because I’ve worked in many of those settings myself. And if you are ready to leave the law, I can help you translate your education and training to a new field that feels right for you.

I’m Amy Briggs. I have more than two decades of comprehensive experience coaching lawyers. As the Director of Law Career Development at two DC-area law schools, I helped law students and lawyers navigate every aspect of the job search, from exploring options to negotiating salary. During my time as Director of Recruiting at an AmLaw 50 firm, I managed recruiting, hiring, and the summer associate program. Lawyer outplacement has been a large part of my practice during the last 10+ years.

I earned a BA in Economics and a MEd in Counseling from the University of Virginia. During my time at the law schools and the firm, I was regularly asked to the speak to national audiences, wrote numerous articles about career development issues, and authored a book published by NALP on how to choose a law school.

My mission is to help clients uncover their true strengths, create a plan of action, and move forward to find the best fit possible.

What I do

We begin with a complimentary 15 minute meeting where you tell me what’s led you to seek a career coach. Together, we decide if we’re a good match and how we’ll move forward to get you where you want to be. Your goals will determine what we do during our sessions. Below are examples of common topics:

  • Career exploration
  • Skills, strengths, and values assessment
  • Resume, LinkedIn, and cover letter development
  • Interviewing skills and practice
  • How to network your way to a new position

Several years ago, I was contemplating returning to school for a JD. After talking with Amy, I realized that a JD was not needed for the career I was going to pursue. Instead, I pivoted to graduate business school, which saved me a year of my life and tens of thousands of dollars. Five years out of an MBA program, I’m working in my dream job.

I used templates I found online for my resume but wasn’t getting any interviews. A neighbor recommended Amy. In just two sessions, I was able to pull together a professional resume and come up with a plan to target certain employers. Less than a month later, I’m employed full time. Amy was very easy to work with and the Zoom sessions saved me a ton of travel time.
